ACT I

SCENE I - a bedroom.
Enter ‘IN BED’ and ‘already awake’.

    already awake: hi, honey.
    IN BED: GOOD MORNING.
    already awake: how are ya?
IN BED: OLD. OLD AND UNCOMFORTABLE.
already awake: awww sweetums. well i won’t say i told you so. i’ll just say what a shame.
IN BED: YOU SAID I TOLD YOU SO.
already awake: do you want some bananas? do you want some cookies? do you want some blankets?
IN BED: NO THANK YOU. I NEED INSPIRATION.
already awake: oh honey, you don’t need that, not if you have a cookie and a blanket and a ‘nana.
IN BED: YES I DO. YES I DO YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND. I WILL FADE AWAY, DISAPPEAR. GO CRAZY. I NEED INSPIRATION.
already awake: i could give you some toast instead? or perhaps some money? would you like that?
IN BED: I MIGHT LIKE IT FOR A MOMENT, BUT I DON’T WANT TO LIKE SOMETHING. I WANT TO FEEL INSPIRED, FOR THE LIFE IN ME, WHAT’S LEFT OF IT, TO SING OUT LIKE A ROBIN IN THE MORNING, TO DANCE IN THE LIGHT OF THE MOON, YOU KNOW, LIKE THE PUSSYCAT.
already awake: maybe some tea then, or beer? you always like beer! you’re probably just thirsty.
IN BED: NO, YOU KNOW THE PUSSYCAT, AND THE OWL IS HIS TRUE LOVE AND THEY GET MARRIED AND DANCE BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON? THEY DIDN’T HAVE ANY BEER OR BLANKETS, AND THE BOAT IS PROBABLY ROCKING ON THE WAVES AND MAKING EVERYONE SEASICK, BUT IT DOESN’T MATTER BECAUSE THEY’RE INSPIRED AND THEY DANCE BY THE LIGHT OF THE MOON.
already awake: a bedtime story then, honey?
IN BED: THAT’S CLOSE EXCEPT IT’S NOT MY BEDTIME AND I’D RATHER WRITE THE STORY.
already awake: *weeping* a… pen then? and… some… paper? *sniff* oh i don’t know! i don’t understand. i never understand! i just don’t get it! i need a blanket. there. i feel a bit better. but honey, i’m sorry, i’m so sorry.
IN BED: *WELLING UP TOO* I’M SORRY I’M NOT EASY. I KNOW YOU TRY. YOU KNOW, I’LL TAKE A PEN AND PAPER, THANK YOU.
already awake: a pen and paper! yes! here it is! but you’ll be hungry? you can’t eat it. and you’ll be cold! i’m so worried about you, honey.
IN BED: YOU KNOW, I THINK I’LL BE JUST FINE, MAYBE I’LL EAT SOMETHING LATER. AND I’M NOT COLD. I THINK I’LL SPEND SOME TIME WITH THIS PEN AND PAPER. THANKS.
already awake: of course! i’ll just curl up right here beside you then, and keep you warm. let me know if you need anything!
IN BED: *WRITING, DRAWING, DREAMING, FEELING REAL*
SCENE II - the same bedroom.
Enter ‘IN BED’, writing, and ‘already awake’.

IN BED: OH IT’S NO GOOD, IT’S TERRIBLE WHAT I’VE WRITTEN. I’M NOT INSPIRED.
already awake: no, it’s not terrible!
IN BED: YOU HAVEN’T EVEN SEEN IT.
already awake: well i just know! can i see it?
IN BED: MAYBE. I DON’T KNOW. OK.
already awake: oooh! ooh. oooh! it’s… it’s scary!
IN BED: SCARY? ERGH YOU HATE IT.
already awake: no i don’t hate it! i’ve just never seen anything like it before. it’s challenging.
IN BED: SO YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND IT. ERRRGGGAAAAHHHHGGGRRRRAAA.
already awake: let me read it again… ok… ok… so is the person not really a person? and the other people don’t really mean that? and… they’re not really going to do that?
IN BED: NO. I MEAN YES. YOU’RE RIGHT. YOU DO GET IT.
    already awake: i get it!
IN BED: BUT YOU DON’T LIKE IT.
already awake: no! i just need to understand it. it’s like… blankets. i like blankets, and i need them, so it’s hard for me to understand that people don’t need them, like you honey. i need bananas and tea and not to be thirsty. but you need something else. it’s like that. i read it and i see the people and the words and the things they do, and it’s scary at first. but honey you write something else, and it just looks like people and things and words. but really it’s something else. it’s inspired.
IN BED: YOU THINK IT’S INSPIRED?
already awake: i do. i think it’s inspired.
    IN BED: I COULD’VE SWORN I WASN’T INSPIRED. I HAD NO INSPIRATION.
already awake: well you must’ve had it hidden away in a pocket somewhere and forgotten about it.
IN BED: I MUST’VE HAD IT IN A POCKET SOMEWHERE AND FORGOTTEN ABOUT IT.
already awake: so you didn’t need it! you just had to remember you had it.
IN BED: I GUESS SO… HMMM. SO STRANGE. I COULD’VE SWORN I DIDN’T HAVE IT. BUT MAYBE I DID. MAYBE I DO. THANKS.
already awake: thank you for showing me things i didn’t know about. a world i never saw before. ah look, the moon’s coming up honey. we’ve been talking all day.
IN BED: THE MOON! WILL YOU DANCE WITH ME?

*they DANCE*
