Lyrics

I wrote a song yesterday. I sat down with some free time and played my guitar for a while, my resonator. Then I sat and was still for a while, waiting to see if anything would come to me if I was present. I wrote in my book, at first nothing too coherent, but then I started to write some lyrics that amused me. I kept writing them, and then turned them into a song. I don’t know if I’ll ever record or release or otherwise make public the song, but I am sharing the lyrics here for fun.

Saw a rat yesterday
Two rats actually
Scurrying under a dumpster
Just there

The bus was late
I never meant to even be on it
And it was raining on my hair

Real joy, real joy
I got it from nowhere
I got it from nowhere

It’s cold here in January
But not as cold as where I’m going
At least the sun shines there

You told me about all the people
You didn’t want to see
I said “don’t see them then”

Real joy, real joy
I got it from nowhere
I got it from nowhere

There was a dog outside a cafe
Who resembled a floating cloud
With a muddy face
And a tiny little tail

Somewhere it’s not raining
But that place isn’t here
And I still haven’t bought
An umbrella

Real joy, real joy
I got it from nowhere
I got it from nowhere

I dropped a suitcase
Out of the window
I still haven’t found it
I guess I never looked

A lady had a ring
That reminded me of my wife’s
I said it was lovely
She said thanks very much
It was my grandmother’s
I said your grandmother had good taste
She said thank you very much
Can I order now?

Real joy, real joy
I got it from nowhere
I got it from nowhere

You said there was a word
For the phenomenon
That the best times you remember
Were the most uncomfortable

Real joy, real joy
I got it from nowhere
I got it from nowhere
